2007 bmw 328i oil capacity

So, if you’re still driving your 2007 328i BMW, then you must’ve maintained your car very well.

And one of the most basic maintenance steps is scheduled oil changes.

Now you want to do your oil changes yourself and want to know about the 2007 BMW 328i oil capacity.

Then don’t worry here we’ll describe the oil capacity, oil change frequency & oil changing step by step guide.

So, let’s delve right into it.

2007 BMW 328i oil capacity

Your engine oil capacity is the amount of oil your engine needs in every scheduled oil change.

Your 2007 BMW 328i has an oil capacity of 6.9 quarts (6.5-6.6 liters) with a filter.

Remember it’s a 3.0L 6-cylinder engine, so many people assume it has an oil capacity of 3 liters. However, this is not the case, the 3 liter doesn’t indicate the engine oil capacity.

It describes the engine displacement, where the higher the fuel quantity the higher the power output. we’ll discuss the engine liter concept in detail later sometime, now let’s know about the 328i engine oil.

What Type of oil does a 2007 BMW 328i need?

So, now you know the first step in your oil-changing process. Now let’s know about your 2007 328i oil type, so you don’t just buy any engine oil you see online.

So for your 2007 328i, BMW recommends using SAE 5W-40 Synthetic Engine Oil. This is the most suitable oil for your particular 328i year because it maintains engine reliability & longevity.

If you don’t understand the oil types and their category then don’t worry I’ll try to explain you as simply as possible.

The SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, an organization that sets standards and regulates different aspects of engine oils. The SAE has a viscosity grade system, which categorizes oil based on its viscosity. Where it refers, at different temperatures, to the flowing resistance of the oil.

Here the “W” means winter, and the “5” means the oil viscosity in winters, indicating oil flowing smoothness during low temperatures.

The “40” means the oil will maintain its SAE 40 level or thin at the vehicle’s normal operating temperature of the engine approximately 220°F (105°C).

So, the SAE 5W-40 basically means the oil will flow smoothly in different temperature conditions. And the thickness is perfect for the engine to run smoothly, without any wear and tear.

How often to Change the Oil On Your 2007 BMW 328i?

Now you know about your car’s oil capacity and oil type, and the last thing you need to know is the oil changing schedule. So, let’s find out how often your 2007 BMW 328i needs an oil change.

So BMW recommends changing the oil every 7,500-10,000 miles or 12 months whichever comes first.

However, I would suggest you change the oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months whichever comes first. Because the oil changing interval also varies on the temperature/weather, stop and go driving(traffic), and many other things. So it’s better to stay in a safe spot.

However, if you’re going to use conventional oil (not recommended) then you need to change the oil every 3,000-5,000 miles.

How To Change Oil On 2007 BMW 328i

After knowing all the oil changing basics, now let’s go into the step by step oil changing process.

And while changing the oil, you should also change the oil filter, because both go hand in hand and it is also cost & time-saving.

So, simply follow these steps and change the oil & filter on your 328i without any expert knowledge.

Tools Needed:

  • 6.9 quarts of SAE 5W-40 Synthetic Oil
  • Oil Filter
  • Oil Filter wrench
  • Jack and Jack stands
  • Funnel
  • 17mm Socket wrench
  • Drain Pan (10 liters capacity)
  • Shop towels
  • safety glasses & gloves

Here, the 6.9 quarts is around 6.5-6.6 liters and you’ll need to get 7 liters of oil, where you’ll get some leftovers.

Oil Changing Process:

Before starting the process make sure to wear the safety glasses and gloves.

  • First of all, lift up your car using the jack & jack stands and engage the emergency brakes.
  • Now start the engine for about 10-15 minutes to let the oil warm up for easy draining.
  • Now lose the oil filler cap located on top of the engine.
  • Then loose the oil filter cap using the oil filter wrench.
  • Now go under your car with the drain pan, 17mm socket wrench & a flathead.
  • Directly in front of the catalytic converter, you’ll find the cover of the oil drain plug.
  • Use the flathead to open the cover and locate the oil drain plug.
  • Now put the drain pan beneath the drain plug, and open the plug using the 17mm socket wrench. (remember it will be hot so do it carefully)
  • The oil will be drained in under 3-5 minutes.
  • So, while the oil is drained take out the oil filter from the housing and replace it with the new oil filter.
  • Also, replace two old O-rings with the new O-rings from the oil filter kit, put the oil filter back in the housing, and close it tightly.
  • Now change the oil drain plug washer with the new washer from the oil filter kit.
  • Close the oil drain plug after all the oil is drained.
  • Now open the oil filler cap and use the funnel to carefully add the oil.
  • After adding the oil close the oil filler cap by rotating it clockwise.
  • Now check if the recommended oil quantity is filled.
  • Now clean the oil drain plug area, oil filter area, and the oil filler cap area.
  • And start the car for 5-10 minutes to check for any leakage.

If there’s no oil leakage and the oil level is right, then congratulations you’ve just done an oil change on your 2007 BMW 328i.

And remember to dispose of the old engine oil in any Autoshop or local recycling center.
